![]() It shows diners that when food is cooked this close to the soul, luxury - the feeling that you’re being taken care of - comes naturally. FSS doesn’t mark its deluxe territory by throwing caviar-and-truffle parades. ![]() That is, if you want elegance sans stuffiness or fluff, eight courses that flow like they’re synapses firing inside Chad Williams’s brain (crisped sweetbreads with plantain and mushrooms, then gemelli draped in lardo and scallop XO, then sticky jerk-seasoned quail with a side of chicken-liver-stuffed coco bread). That is, if you want to try what is without question the most precise and innovative fine-dining food in Philadelphia right now. When a restaurant operates a city-defining bar downstairs (with great snacks) and a $150 tasting menu upstairs, the natural question becomes: Do you really need to do the tasting to get what’s going on here? In the case of FSS, you do. Grilled quail, coco bread and lamb ribs at Friday Saturday Sunday / Photograph by Ted Nghiem 2. Go to these Philly restaurants with the confidence of the Phillie Phanatic on an ATV, or that guy who ate 40 rotisserie chickens for no apparent reason. Because, frankly, I or my co-writers ate at all these restaurants recently, and who among us without a corporate card has the time and resources to do such a thing? Rankings are also meant to help you make up your mind about how to spend your money. Actually, that’s why they’re back: to make you pay special attention, to celebrate the places that have been ignored on previous ranked lists, to declare emphatically that $15 worth of fried bananas and turmeric-doused chicken skewers at the Southeast Asian Market at FDR Park can be just as remarkable as a $100-plus meal. Rankings tend to have that effect on people. Perhaps you’ve already stopped reading these prefatory words entirely out of an obsession with said digits. It asks, 50 times over, how likely are you to shout from the rooftops about a dining experience, or demand that a friend cross the city for dim sum and vegan polenta and jerk chicken, or spend hard-earned money on an anniversary dinner?Īnd by now, I’m sure you’ve noticed that this year’s guide involves hot little numbers. This 50 Best list is the result of nearly a year’s worth of dining out, sometimes four or five or six nights a week. How could I have known that Philly’s best special-occasion meals would feel deeply personal right now, as they do at Friday Saturday Sunday, Her Place Supper Club, and Royal Sushi Omakase? How could I have anticipated that within minutes of plopping into my seat at Pietramala, Càphê Roasters, Irwin’s or El Mezcal Cantina, uncomplicated friendliness and a glass of Philly tap would make me realize that I belonged back in my hometown? (I grew up here this wasn’t a shock.) But after a hiatus from our city during which I wrote about restaurants and bars in NYC, I couldn’t have predicted the care and energy with which Philly’s restaurants would reposition themselves in this sorta-post-COVID world. Which is to say, a Philadelphian’s unrelenting access to foods of all kinds. When I first signed on to be this magazine’s food editor, I was prepared for what I call Philly Restaurant Privilege. ![]() ![]() ![]() I knew what she meant: the revived freedom of schmoozing in a dining room without an iPhone in sight, the creativity coming out of Philly kitchens and onto plates, that bubbling, symbiotic joy that takes place only when everyone in a restaurant’s ecosystem - the diners, the porters, the front-of-house staff, the cooks - genuinely wants to be there. Not so long ago, a friend texted me to say that for the first time in years, she was having Fun eating in Philly’s restaurants. Royal Sushi & Izakaya / Photograph by Jesse Ito ![]()

The difference is not large, with the maximum difference being less than 2.5%, and less than 0.5% difference for concentrations under 20%. Whereas to make a 50% v/v ethanol solution, 50 ml of ethanol and 50 ml of water could be mixed but the resulting volume of solution will measure less than 100 ml due to the change of volume on mixing, and will contain a higher concentration of ethanol. For example, to make 100 ml of 50% ABV ethanol solution, water would be added to 50 ml of ethanol to make up exactly 100 ml. Volume fraction, which is widely used in chemistry (commonly denoted as v/v), is defined as the volume of a particular component divided by the sum of all components in the mixture when they are measured separately. Thus, ABV is not the same as volume fraction expressed as a percentage. The attraction allows closer spacing between molecules than is usually found in non-polar mixtures. When water is added to ethanol, the smaller water molecules are attracted to the ethanol's hydroxyl group, and each molecule alters the polarity field of the other. Water and ethanol are both polar solvents. The phenomenon of volume changes due to mixing dissimilar solutions is called " partial molar volume". Mixing pure water with a solution less than 24% by mass causes a slight increase in total volume, whereas the mixing of two solutions above 24% causes a decrease in volume. ![]() Mixing two solutions of alcohol of different strengths usually causes a change in volume. France, alcohol by volume is often referred to as degrees Gay-Lussac (after the French chemist Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac), although there is a slight difference since the Gay-Lussac convention uses the International Standard Atmosphere value for temperature, 15 ☌ (59 ☏). The International Organization of Legal Metrology has tables of density of water–ethanol mixtures at different concentrations and temperatures. The number of millilitres of pure ethanol is the mass of the ethanol divided by its density at 20 ☌ (68 ☏), which is 0.78945 g/ml (0.82353 oz/US fl oz 0.79122 oz/imp fl oz 0.45633 oz/cu in). It is defined as the number of millilitres (mL) of pure ethanol present in 100 mL (3.5 imp fl oz 3.4 US fl oz) of solution at 20 ☌ (68 ☏). The alcohol by volume shown on a bottle of absintheĪlcohol by volume (abbreviated as ABV, abv, or alc/vol) is a standard measure of how much alcohol ( ethanol) is contained in a given volume of an alcoholic beverage (expressed as a volume percent). ![]() ![]() They interact with the environment as a pair, making them easy to identify compared to regular ghosts. The only positive of this ghost is that using the Ouija Board around it will not lower your sanity. It's extremely violent and the Crucifix is recommended to be used when searching for it to help prevent it from initiating its hunts as frequently. The Phantom is one of the slowest of the ghosts. So, if you turn on all the lights it's less likely to attack but it tends to turn them off or trip the breaker box so that it can hunt you. They can be calm or incredibly aggressive, and often quite hard to discern from other spirits. They usually appear due to an unexplained death and have no unique features to them besides the fact they can be halted temporarily using a Smudge Stick. Spirits are the most common type of ghost. They won't like to appear when you're around and never move far from the room they're based in, so your best bet for tracking down a Goryo is with the use of a Video Camera and your DOTS projector. Their aggression peaks when they can hear voices, so take caution and go steady with the Spirit Box if you suspect that you're facing a Yokai!ĭue to Goryu not often appearing – they're camera-shy, you could say – it can be very hard to track them down, let alone take a photo of them. The Yokai can be tricky to handle, especially since they can deplete your sanity and take you down almost instantly. So, as soon as you encounter those freezing temperatures, it's probably best to try and be stealthy or move to a warmer area as you collect the rest of your evidence. The Hantu has a unique ability, in which they can move faster as temperatures decrease. If you think you're facing a Banshee and need to protect yourself, note that the Crucifix is only effective for up to 5 meters against them. They will become obsessed with one player and not leave that particular target alone, so it will likely be up to the rest of the team to find evidence. The Banshee is of a more medium difficulty to tackle. So if you think you're facing a Myling and things become silent all of a sudden. However, they tend to go quiet during a hunt. This video clip explains the three steps in wind erosion (detachment, transport, and deposition). Wind erosion most commonly occurs in arid and semi-arid regions, because of the frequent occurrence of dry and windy conditions. As the wind speed decreases, deposition of soil particles begins. While larger particles rolling along the soil surface move shorter distance and also shatter other soil particles along the way. Fine sands, silt or clay size particles can be transported for great distances by strong winds. Once detached these particles are transported by either suspension into air and/or rolling along the soil surface. Wind detaches soil particles from the surface. Similarly, wind erosion is a world-wide problem that occurs when strong winds blow across dry soil on unprotected surfaces. ![]() As the water velocity slows down it loses the energy needed to continue carrying the detached suspended soil particles, and the soil particles are then deposited in their new location. How many particles and how far they are transported depends on the velocity and volume of the running water. If the rainfall rate exceeds the rate at which water can infiltrate the soil, the excess water runs off and often carries the detached soil particles with it.ĭetached particles (sediment) are carried with flowing water down the slope. This can clog and seal soil pores and result in reduced water entry (infiltration) into the soil. Some of the detached particles float into soil pore spaces. Raindrops can splash soil particles, moving them up to three feet away. Raindrop impact is the primary cause of particle detachment. The impact of raindrops shatters surface aggregates and detaches soil particles from them. The impact of a water droplet dislodges and scatters soil particles. Clay or silt size particles can be carried a great distance before deposition, while larger sand-size particles will be carried only a short distance. This action deposits the sediment when the wind and water energy subsides. DEPOSITION of particles in a new location: This action carries soil particles in the moving wind or water.ģ. This action dislodges the particles from the soil by the impact energy of the rain or wind.
